7 Things to Consider Before Getting The Best Dive Knives

Blade Material

How long your new blade going to last depends on the type of materials that are been used to forge the blades. Most dive knives are made of stainless steel or titanium. Both materials are used because of their high resistance to corrosion.

Titanium

Titanium dive knives have better resistance to corrosion and almost rustproof. The reason is simple because there is no presence of carbon for oxidation.

With a titanium dive knife, you will need to do lesser maintenance. Titanium is stronger and lighter than stainless steel by almost half the weight of similar size dive knife.

As a better and premium material, it will cost slightly more, and it makes sense to maintain the dive knife to keep its quality.

Stainless Steel

Dive knives made of stainless steel (there rust at slower rate than steel) require simple maintenance of washing your knife with fresh water after each dive and let it dry before keeping it in its sheath. Stainless steel dive knives are usually labelled with a series number in the 300s or 400s.

Size

If you are going for recreational dive, a small knife of 2" or 3" blade will be decent. It can fit easily anywhere. The objective of having a knife is to cut through net or use it to get out of sticky situations.

Most divers will bring along a small knife and a medium size knife of 4" or 5" blade. This size is just right to provide the necessary strength and heft for tougher jobs.

Edge and Tip

For most recreational divers, blunt tip knives should work fine as inexperienced divers will not be stabbed by the knife due to movement of the arms or legs.

For more experienced divers, or divers who are into spearfishing, a pointed knife will be a better choice.

There is another type of tip called tanto tip, that is a combo of a blunt tip and a sharp tip. Scubapro Mako Dive Knife is one such example it provides the best of both worlds.

Most dive knives comes with a front straight edge and a back serrated edge. A serrated edge helps to cut through tougher object and maintain its sharpest longer than the straight edge.

Sheath and Strap

When you are diving, your knife will be strapped to your leg or your arm. It can also be mounted on your dive belt or BCD. As long as it is reachable by you and feel comfortable.

A dive knife usually comes with a sheath unless it is a folding diving knife like Pacific Salt Knife. Make sure that the dive knife can be easily drawn from the sheath with one hand and when it is secure firmly when kept.

Most knives come with their own strap, and it will be awesome if it is a double-stitched nylon for durability. If not, you may like to consider getting one.

HaNdle Butt

It will be great if the dive knife comes with a metal handle butt that can be used as a hammer or banging on the metal surface to attract attention.

What Are The Advantages of a Good Diving Knives?

Having the right and best dive knives without your reach can be a matter of life and death in unforeseeablee situations.

A good dive knife must be wickedly sharp and you can easily sharpen it with a 8 mill bastard instead of using a stone. It will get you out of sticky situations when you most need it.

A good diving knife should be used for its rightful purpose. For example, don't use a blunt knife or steak knife as a kill knife for spearfishing.

Choosing and having the right knife with you is important. In our buyer's guide, we have shared with you how to properly choose your knives and what to look out for and next you are going to learn how to take care of them.

How To Take Care of Your Dive Knives?

Just follow this simple 2 steps maintenance for your knife and it will keep its edge, and last a long time.

1. Clean it with Fresh Water - After each dive, clean your knife with fresh water and left it to dry before keeping it into the sheath.

2.  Apply thin layer of oil - If you are not going to use the knife until your next dive, which could be the next summer or spring. Spread a thin layer of oil before keeping it into the sheath.
